Why working out in the summer is important
Summer has officially arrived; and more than ever it is important we continue (or even begin) to take care of our bodies.
I teach a corporate class every Tuesday and this week when I went in and surveyed the students some of them were asking for a little relief from all the gardening and yard work they did over the long weekend. Usually, this being a corporate class, we spend a lot of time on things like “tech neck” or finding relief for carpal tunnel or back issues from too much sitting at the desk. They also have an amazing wellness/fitness program leaving many with tight hamstrings from spin class or over-worked muscles from weight lifting.
Back to the weary gardeners … In my personal practice, I have been doing and researching a lot of yin yoga. Yin (as opposed to yang) is a less active practice of yoga, holding poses for a longer duration so that one can get beyond a muscle stretch and address the connective tissue and joints. It is a very healing practice. So we worked on what I called Yard Yin! Working outside usually consists of a lot of squatting and bending over. We did a series of poses that addressed all sides of the legs and hips as well as low back and a little bit of shoulder work. If I must say so myself, it was wonderful! Perhaps we can work on this in the Monday night class!
So, whether you are working hard or playing hard this summer, but sure to take care of your body, mind and spirit.
Peace, Love and Happy Gardening,
Jeannette
